Scooter care, come rain or shine

A mobility scooter does so much more than simply getting you from A to B. It can improve your overall health and wellbeing by getting you outside and keeping you connected.

That's why looking after your scooter is so important. It doesn't take much - think little but often. Regular care will go a long way to keeping your scooter out of the repairs workshop and right by your side.

We've asked our experts to give us their top tips for maintaining your scooter, so you can get the most out of it, all year round.

Light cleaning

Keep your scooter in tip-top condition with a low effort but highly effective clean after each use.

Day to night, season to season, your scooter tackles an ever changing terrain. From puddles to muddy pathways, gravel to grassy slopes.

Give your scooter a quick wipe after each use, and you'll avoid a build up of dirt & debris. All you need is a soapy cloth or a cleaning wipe - nothing fancy. Run it along the seat and your scooter’s handlebars.

If you've been exploring the great outdoors, give scooter tyres a quick hose down. This is an easy way to keep tyres clean and their tracks clear. Be sure to keep water away from your scooter's electricals and give it a thorouugh dry afterwards.

Storage

When you're not using your scooter, find somewhere cool and dry to store it. A build up of moisture can cause rusting - not ideal for your scooter’s sensitive componentry.

A money and space saving tip is to purchase a waterproof covering - such as tarpaulin - from your local homeware shop. This simple sheet is a cost-effective way to protect your scooter from rust and dust. Simply drape over your scooter when not in use.

If you're keeping your scooter outside, be sure to weigh down your waterproof sheet. This will keep it secure in adverse weather conditions.

For extra peace of mind, consider storing your scooter under lock and key. This could include a lockable unit, a large cupboard or garage space. Make sure that the space you choose is dry and easy to access, to keep both you and your scooter safe.

Tyre checks

Avoiding a puncture is the number one way to keep you and your scooter on the go.

Scooter tyres are robust & sturdy, but they're not immune from wear & tear. Checking a few essentials before you set off will ensure a safe onward journey.

Our top tips for puncture-proofing your mobility scooter are as simple as 1, 2, 3:

TAP your tyres to check that they are fully inflated
TOUCH along the grooves to feel for rips or any obvious damage
CHECK for any items that may have become stuck, such as leaves or gravel

Battery care

Upon delivery, your mobility scooter will arrive fully charged and ready to go. After a few spins, plug in your battery charger to keep power topped up.

No need to keep an eye on the charging unit - it will switch off automatically once your batteries are full. Go about your daily routine, or even better, charge your batteries overnight. Either way, you'll not have to worry about running up a huge electric bill.

Remember to keep your batteries and their charger somewhere dry & clean. This will avoid a build up of rust or debris that could hinder their performance.

A top tip from our engineers is to charge your scooter batteries even when it's not in use. A quick power boost when your scooter mileage is low - typically in the winter - will keep batteries healthy and your scooter ready and raring to go.

Chair care

A mobility scooter can be an extension of ourselves in more ways than one. You might rely on your scooter a lot and spend a lot of time in the chair.

Maintaining the good condition of your scooter’s chair will help it stand the test of time. And of course, keep you comfortable.

It's important to keep an eye out for any signs of damage. Even the smallest of tears can quickly form a larger rip that can damage the inner foam. This is the material that gives your scooter chair its form and shape.

Scooter chairs are uniquely designed to support your body comfortably, so making sure they are in the best condition possible is very important.

An easy way to keep your scooter chair in mint condition is to pick up a simple seat cover. They tend to be lightweight, made from durable, waterproof materials. Covers come in all shapes, sizes and designs and are a cost effective way to protect your chair all year round.

All weather protection

Depending on where and how often you use your scooter, investing in some waterproof equipment can add years to your scooter’s life.

Accessories such as a scooter canopy or a large, weatherproof cover, can protect your scooter from the elements.

A waterproof blanket is another way to keep both you and your scooter warm and dry when the British weather plays up.
